calligraphy

I have studied Tibetan calligraphy for over 20 years. Carving Buddhist mantras or prayers into rocks has been a part of Tibetan Buddhist practice and culture for millennia. When I lived and worked at Vajrapani Institute, one of the first ever Tibetan Buddhist centers in America, I carved a few prayers into rocks in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Tibetan Alphabet Project

The contemporary Tibetan writing system is over 1200 years old. Around six scripts were developed over a period of 200 years in the 7th century AD primarily as a means to translate the entire Buddhist cannon from Sanskrit into Tibetan. This translation project took over 1000 years mainly divided into two eras.

Since then there has not been any new development in Tibetan calligraphy. As someone who has studied Tibetan calligraphy over 20 years, I decided to create a Sans-Serif display typeface for the Tibetan alphabet.
